Mommy! Itsy Bitsy Spider Bit Me!

One of the most commonly found critters at home is the spider. Although most of it are friendly, there are spiders that can be dangerous to kids like the brown recluse spider and the black widow.

If your kid has been bitten by a spider (not the two spiders mentioned above), here are some of the things that you can do to treat your child at home.

  • Wash the area several times with water and soap
  • Put an ice cube and let it sit for about 20 minutes
  • Use an anti-biotic ointment and apply it topically on the affected area
  • If your child can’t handle the pain, give him Tylenol or other pain medicine for kids
  • Do these steps until the swelling goes away (about 2-4 days)

But if your child was bitten by the said spiders, seek medical attention immediately.

Choosing a child-friendly car for your family (Part 2)

We just recently talked about some of the features that you must consider when buying a car for you family.  When it comes to your child’s safety, the list goes on and on. Therefore, before making your choice, ask your dealer if the car also have these features as well:

  • Safety locks – who says that kids would only play with the car’s windows? They can also put their hands on the car locks as well, making it very dangerous even if they are on seatbelts.
  • ABS or anti-lock brakes – this allows you to stop your car in various difficult road conditions (slippery and wet roads)
  • Electronic Stability Control – like the ABS, this feature helps you to drive safer. It prevents the vehicle from skidding and sliding which is essential if you have kids as passengers.

Choosing a child-friendly car for your family (Part 1)

When you were still single, your dream automobile are usually the sports cars or the latest models manfactured by Toyota, BMW, and others. But now that you are a parent and have kid (or kids), then its time to put this dream aside. Follow your instincts as a parent and choose a  car that can be safe for the rest of the members of the family.

Choose a family car where you (the driver) can control the windows and keep it locked while traveling. So even if your toddlers and bigger kids would play on the window controls, you can make sure that they are safe at the passenger’s seat.

Aside from that, you must also get the car that has adjustable seat belts. This is important since you will be using your family car for a long time and your child would definitely grow traveling in this vehicle.

Are eggs safe for your infants?

Aside from milk, most parents serve eggs to their little ones especially if they are already starting to eat solid foods. But is it really safe for the infants?

Some parents do not to give their infants eggs because they are afraid that it would result to food allergy.  But if you think that food allergy does not run in your family (both yours and your husband’s side) then you can start feeding eggs to your kids as long as they are over twelve months old.

However, the egg yolk is considered safe and can be fed for infants that are between 7 months up to 10 months old.

It can be a great source of iron as well as DHA.

So if you want your 7-month old infant to have some eggs, trying scrambling it by including formula milk, butter, and a little bit of cheese as well.

Now that almost every parent is aware that the favorite foods and meals from the popular fastfood chains are unhealthy for their kids, many are trying to convince their children to eat healthy at home instead. But little do they know that they are also introducing and feeding their kids fastfoods even at home. Below are some of the most common fast foods that are served at home.

  • french fries
  • hot dog
  • frozen pizza
  • chicken fingers
  • mac and cheese
  • corn dogs
  • pre-made sandwiches

If you really want to cut back on the grease and fats that your child can get from fastfood chains, start at home. Limit your child’s intake of the said foods to prevent obesity and other conditions that are not good for your child’s well-being.

The Importance of Reading the Labels

More often than not, when parents do their grocery, they always choose the brand that is popular on TV or the brand that are best used by other parents as well. They don’t take so much time reading the label because they have so much trust on the celebrity advertising the product.

But try to take time to read the labels of each and every product that you will buy and compare to the other items in the shelves. You will notice that not all popular items endorsed by celebrities and alike have more nutritional values. Aside from that, by reading the labels, you will get to choose the foods that are healthier. You will realize that the commodities that have more nutritional values are sometimes cheaper than the foods that you usually buy.

Be wise without compromising the health of your family.

The Nutritional Value of Peanuts

Unless you have proven that your child is allergic to peanuts, let them have a serving of P&J (peanut butter and jelly) at least every other day. Why? There are so many reasons why you should let them enjoy eating the most favorite sandwich around the world.

It is right that peanut butter is rich in fat. However, it is one of the good fats called mono-unsaturated fats. Some peanut butters also have poly-saturated fats as well. These are the fats that are not like the ones you find in greasy foods.

Aside from the healthy fats, peanut butter is also a great source of various vitamins including A, E, and B6.  Other nutritions that you can find in peanut butter are copper, magnesium, zinc, folic acid, and of course, protein.

Is there such thing as Too much fruit juice?

As parents, we know for a fact that one of the healthiest treats that your child can get is fruit juice.  But according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, there are also different disadvantages if you give your child too much fruit juice.

Because of the sugar content of the fruit juice, drinking too much of it may lead to obesity. It may be one of the major factors that would lead your child to become obese especially if it runs in your family.

And again, because of the sugar content of these beverages, fruit juices may also carry dental cavities and would ruin your child’s teeth early. Therefore, letting your teething toddler have too much of the good thing is actually bad for their teeth and their fragile gum’s health.

Questions to ask yourself before choosing a pedia

Your child’s health and safety is definitely one of your major concerns as a parent. But sometimes, a mother’s loving touch or a father’s hand that gives security is not enough to keep your baby healthy. Before choosing the doctor or pediatrician that would examine your child’s well-being from time to time, here are some of the questions that you must first ask yourself.

  1. Is your child’s doctor honor your insurance policies?

  3. Can you call for an appointment and schedule it the same day?
  4. Is the pediatrician available even after clinic hours?
  5. Where are the pediatrician’s affiliated hospitals?
  6. Is his/her office has a separate waiting room for those who have sick babies?

These are just some questions that may help in finding that perfect pediatrician.  Have you already found yours?

Baby Beddings: Keeping your baby safe

Do you know that there are actually hundreds of babies found dead in their own cribs because of unsafe bedding?

One of the most commn reactions of every couple once they knew that they are getting pregnant is EXCITEMENT! And because of this excited feeling for a little bundle of joy, they shop for the things that would seem to bring comfort and luxury to the baby including the crib and the beddings. Unfortunately, they sometimes forget that the simpler bedding is the mos advisable especially for infants.

Don’t buy thick quilts that are very, very soft. Although your little one would be very comfortable lying in these soft quilts, they can be at risk because of these beddings.  Thick blankets are not also advisable as well. If your baby’s room is cold, then just put on something that would make him feel warm like a set of pajamas.
