No commentsYour newborn and his umbilical cord
Every part of your infant’s body is very fragile. A newborn must be well-taken care of from head to toe. Days after the mother gives birth, the umbilical stump will remain on the newborn’s stomach. While the stump hasn’t fallen yet, it is a must that you take proper care and must always be cleaned to avoid infection.
It must be cleaned everyday with alcohol and a cotton ball. Each and every time that you change your baby’s diaper, you should clean the stump and the area around it as well. The alcohol would help in drying the umbilical stump fast. Sponge bathing your baby is advisable until the stump has already dried and fallen off.
Seeing a small part of the stump with a dried blood is perfectly normal. However, seek medical attention once you see that the umbilical stump has a foul smell.
No commentsIs colic the main reason why infants cry?
Infants can’t say a word nor do signs. That is why parents and nannies are always having a hard time guessing why the baby cries. More often than not, they blame it on colic.
The reason for colic is still not clear. Usually, infants between three weeks up to six weeks old. However, there are some infants experiencing colic until they are 4 months old. Colic may happen any time of the day. But most parents notice that their babies cry during the early hours of the evening.
There are anti-colic treatments that you can avail over the counter such as gripe water and homeopathic colic tablets. You can also swaddle your baby until he stops crying whenever he has colic.

Does your daughter need a Cervical Cancer Vaccine?
Grandparents today usually don’t agree with all the new vaccines sprouting today. Some think that its necessary while others feel that not all vaccine and immunizations are needed.
One of the newest vaccines today is the vaccine that would prevent your daughter from having cervical cancer. However, not every parent thinks that cervical cancer vaccine should be vital just like vaccines for chicken pox, pneumonia, and alike.
Usually this vaccine is given once your daughter reaches 11 or 12 years old. However, some pediatricians recommend that the cervical cancer vaccine must be given by the age of 9. This allows the immune system of your daughter to be activated before she encounter HPV (the factor that causes cancer) of before they become sexually active. Some would only advise that a single dose of cervical cancer vaccine is enough while others said that 3 shots of this vaccine must be completed.
Although it has been proven safe, cervical cancer vaccine may still give negative side effects to the girl such as allergic reactions, weakness and paralysis. There are even cases that the cervical cancer vaccine lead to the death.
No commentsMobile phone for kids: Is it really necessary?
Adults think that cellphones or mobile phones is a necessity. It allows them to easily get in touch with anyone wherever and whenever. But when it comes to your kids and teens, do you think that they also need one?
There are always two sides when it comes to cellphone usage among teens and tweens. One of the main advantages is that you can immediately get in touch with them even if you are miles apart. In case of emergency, mobile phones allow your child to call you so you can be there for him as soon as possible.
On the other hand, mobile phones would expose your child early to the outside world where sex offenders, scammers, etc. Mobile phones would also increase the risk of accident because of distraction. There are already numerous accidents all over the world where a child and a cellphone were involved.
Have you already bought your child a cellphone today? Is it worth it?
No commentsBecause the Book Said So!
Reading can really give you a lot of knowledge in all kinds of topics including parenting. That is why many new parents/first-time mom and dads are into different reading materials that would help them learn more about parenting.
One of the common mistakes that new parents make is that they base everything about the book. Yes, it would teach you a thing or two about changing diapers or how you should react if your toddler is being bullied around, but is it enough?
When it comes to nutrition, first aid, medicine, and alike, the book may be a great help. However, no book can deal with the emotional problems and disorders of your child. Don’t be frustrated if your little one did not react according to what the book said. Believe it or not, parents who are deeply into the parenting/baby books face more frustration because they expect a lot from their child (thanks to the material that they read).
Parenting books are just there to guide you but it doesn’t mean to have to live, eat, and breath it. Bear in mind that your parental instincts is the best tool that would help you cope up with your child’s development. And don’t hesitate to ask your own parents if you have parenting problems instead if the guides don’t seem to work.
No commentsSeeking medical attention for Child Depression
Psychologists are often associated with people who are crazy. That is why when it comes to child depression, both the child and the parents are thinking twice whether they should consult a doctor or not.
If your son or daughter has a child depression, the first thing that you must do is to talk to him/her as a friend. In this way, your child will be more comfortable in opening up his feelings, insecurities, and inhibitions. Tell them that just like when they are sick, psychologists or emotion doctors can help them feel much better. Reassure your child that he has a chemical deficiency which can be fixed and that he is not a crazy person.
Before paying a visit to the doctor, give your child a rundown of things that he can expect from the place and from the doctor. You must also tell your child that his full cooperation is essential so that the doctor can easily treat his depression.
No commentsBigger kids and Pre-teens can still consult pediatricians
When parents mention the word “pedia” they usually think of doctors that they can consult only if their child is still an infant, toddler, or pre-school. Therefore, by the time that their kids are already 10 years old and above, they start looking for doctors for grown-ups.
However, pre-teens or bigger kids can still consult pediatricians. As a matter of fact, pediatricians can look at infants and children aging 16 to 18 years old.
Having one pediatrician to check on your child from birth till puberty can be an advantage for both your child and the doctor. Because they see the doctor as one of the family friends, they would feel very comfortable with the pediatrician to discuss health issues.
But see to it that your teen is still comfortable having his health checked by a child doctor. Sometimes they might feel very awkward as they enter the clinic because of all the baby-related designs, baby weighing scale, and others that which makes the ambiance too babyish.
